The Rolex Milgauss
About the Rolex Milgauss
The Rolex Milgauss is truly a unique watch and one of the most iconic Rolex watches. It was created in 1956 in order to provide scientists, engineers, and other professionals a reliable watch that would not be affected by magnetic fields.
Watch History
With other watches, a magnetic field between 50 and 100 gauss can affect its accuracy. And many scientist were running into problems during experiments. Rolex created the Milgauss in order to address this continuing issue and named it after the French word for one thousand, mille.
Size and Weight
This Rolex model has a watch face that is 40mm in diameter. It is made of one of the highest grades of stainless steel, 904L stainless steel. Therefore, it is highly resistant to scratching, tarnishing, and denting. Also, 904L stainless steel is very polishable and maintains its shine longer than most other stainless steel grades. Usually, this grade of stainless steel is used by industries that require the material to maintain its form under the harshest of conditions, such as in the aerospace industry. Rolex purposefully chose one of the sturdiest grades of stainless steel for the Milgauss model to ensure that even the roughest conditions will have no effect on the preservation of the watch.
Distinct Features
Besides the 904L stainless steel, there are several other distinct features that make the Milgauss desirable. This model is part of the Oyster collection so the iconic Oyster bracelet is part of the model’s design. The sleek, three-piece links make up the bracelet, making it recognizably a Rolex.
The entire design of every Rolex bracelet undergoes intense testing in order to ensure the highest level of quality. It also is sporty and comfortable to wear. The Oyster bracelet was first created in the 1930’s and has maintained its classic beauty and usability. This bracelet style is very clean and polished.
Watch Complications
The Rolex Milgauss model has three color choices for the dial: white, black, and z-blue, an electric blue. The z-blue dial features stunning green sapphire crystal, a unique sight on watches since it was first introduced on the Milgauss model in 2007. The technique used to tint sapphire crystal is a fairly new technique that was first used by Rolex. Making the Milgauss particularly aesthetically pleasing is the subtle green hue of the sapphire crystal when looking at the watch face straight on, as compared to the vibrancy of the sapphire crystal when gazing upon the watch from its side.
The black dial is also framed by green sapphire crystal and is accented by bright orange markers at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. White hour markers fill in the remaining non-orange markers. The white dial has all orange markers that pop on the neutral background. In addition, new Milgauss models today pay homage to the old 1956 model with a lightning bolt shaped seconds hand in bright orange. The lightning bolt adds a playful detail that is unique to the Milgauss and references its magnetic field shielding mechanism.
Additional Watch Special Features
As mentioned, a unique feature of the Rolex Milgauss is its ability to defend against influences by magnetic fields. The superior shielding system may be verified by a Rolex-certified watchmaker since a capital “B” with an arrow is engraved on the magnetic shield, on the inside of the watch. The engraving is the world recognized symbol for magnetic flux density. Ferromagnetic alloys placed inside the Oyster case prevent the magnetic fields from falsely moving the watch hands. This feature is the first of its kind and is what makes the Milgauss a true innovation.
Related to its shielding system, the unique movement of the this Rolex model is state-of-the-art. Its caliber 3131 movement belongs to only the highest precision watches that have been certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute.
Solely designed and produced by Rolex, the Milgauss’ mechanical movement is self-winding and guarantees the ultimate protection against magnetic field interference. This patented technology makes for some of the best watch technology ever created.
The Rolex Milgauss has a loud personality that definitely makes it appealing to a broad clientele.
